Production

Background

WWE's Money in the Bank pay-per-view events feature their own variant of ladder matches, where multiple wrestlers use ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The respective winner was guaranteed a match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at a time of their choosing within the next year. It was the first annual of Money in the Bank event where John Cena was not involved in one of the show's main event.

Storylines

Money in the Bank featured professional wrestling matches that involved wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw, SmackDown, and NXT. Wrestlers portrayed heroes or villains as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches. The ongoing storylines in WWE's weekly television programs provided the background to the 2015 event, which continued the storylines from the previous event in WWE's 2015 pay-per-view schedule, Elimination Chamber.

At Elimination Chamber, Kevin Owens defeated John Cena. Later in the event, it was announced that Cena would face Owens at the Money in the Bank.

As is tradition at this event, the Money in the Bank ladder match will be held where the winner wins a contract for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at any time within the next year. At Elimination Chamber, it was announced that Dolph Ziggler, Neville, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston and Sheamus were added to the match. On the June 4th episode of SmackDown, Kane announced his participation in the match.

At Elimination Chamber, Dean Ambrose defeated WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins by disqualification. After the match, Ambrose took the title belt. On the June 1st episode of Raw, Roman Reigns announced that Ambrose wanted a rematch for the title in a ladder match at Money in the Bank, which Rollins accepted.

On the June 4th episode of SmackDown, The Prime Time Players defeated The Ascension and The Lucha Dragons in a triple threat tag team match to become the #1 contenders to face The New Day for the WWE Tag Team Championship at the event.

At Elimination Chamber, Ryback captured the vacant Intercontinental Championship in an Elimination Chamber match. On the June 1 episode of Raw, before Ryback was scheduled to defend the title against The Miz, Big Show attacked Miz and confronted Ryback. On June 8, it was announced on WWE.com that Ryback would defend the title against Big Show at the event.

On the June 1 episode of Raw, Nikki Bella retained the Divas Championship against Paige after Brie Bella switched with Nikki during the match and pinned Paige. On June 8, it was announced on WWE.com that Nikki would defend the title against Paige at the event.

On the June 8 episode of Raw, it was announced that R-Truth would face King Barrett on the preshow.

Main card

The first match of the night on the main card was a Money in the Bank ladder match for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship contract between Sheamus, Neville, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, Kane, and Dolph Ziggler (with Lana). Near the end of the match, Roman Reigns looked to have it won when Bray Wyatt interfered and attacked him. The match ended with Sheamus knocking Neville off the top of a ladder and grabbing the Money in the Bank briefcase.

The second match of the night was for the WWE Divas Championship between defending champion Nikki Bella and Paige. The action quickly spills outside the ring. Nikki is in control for now. Paige hit a Superkick on Nikki, but Nikki kicks out. Paige applied a modified version of the PTO, but Nikki got to the ropes. Paige hit the Ram-Paige DDT on Nikki, but Nikki kicks out. The Bellas then did "Twin Magic", but Paige beat Brie after a small package. However, Brie revealed that it was her and not Nikki and then Nikki blindsides Paige and then hits the Rack Attack for the pinfall.

The third match of the night was for the WWE Intercontinental Championship between defending champion Ryback and Big Show, with The Miz doing commentary at ringside. Ryback looks to finish this match off quickly as he goes for a Meat Hook, but can't pull off the Shell Shock. Ryback decides to pick on Miz for a little, which gives Show a chance to recoup. Ryback actually uses an armbar, but Show makes it to the ropes. They go back and forth a little before Miz decides to end the match by hitting Big Show causing a disqualification.

The fourth match of the night was a Champion vs. Champion match between U.S Champion John Cena and NXT Champion Kevin Owens. During the match, Cena hit several AA's to Owens, but Owens kicks out of them. Cena gets visibly frustrated and even argues with referee Mike Chioda on the counts. Owens shows off his versatility by hitting a Moonsault and goes for a Hurricarana, but Cena gets out of the way. Cena then went for a Sunset flip, not pulling it off right, but he stayed attached to Owens and was able to pull off a leg trap sunset flip powerbomb, for a 2 count. In the end, Cena pins Owens after hitting another AA. After the match, Cena tried to give Owens props by handing him his NXT title and shaking his hand. Owens pretends to shake Cena's hand, only to ultimately take him out. Owens would then take his NXT Title and head to the back as Cena is laid out outside the ring.

The fifth and final match of the night on the main card was a Tag team match for the WWE Tag Team Championship between defending champions The New Day (Big E and Xavier Woods) and The Prime Time Players (Darren Young and Titus O'Neil). Young starts off by going to town on Woods. Big E gets in and the champs tag in and out as they go to work on Young. New Day gets several two-counts, but Young is able to weather the storm. He gets Titus for the hot tag and Titus does his thing. Big E breaks up one pinfall attempt and Young and Big E take their fight out of the ring. This allows Titus to hit a Sitout powerbomb for the win and the titles.

Main event

The main event of the night was a Ladder match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship between defending champion Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. One highlight of the match saw Ambrose backdrop Rollins through a ladder that was bridged between the ring apron and the announce table. Another notable highlight saw Ambrose, who sold a knee injury throughout, nail Rollins with Dirty Deeds on the Spanish announce table. Rollins displayed a vicious edge throughout the contest and powerbombed Ambrose into the railing twice and then delivered the maneuver one more time on the floor onto a ladder and several chairs toward the end of the match. The match ended when both Ambrose and Rollins went up after the WWE title belt at the same time, they simultaneously unhooked the belt and fell off the ladder. As they come crashing down to the mat together, Rollins maintained possession of the belt, while Ambrose couldn't hang on to it, thus Rollins was declared the winner.
